Preventative mental health initiatives can play a role in mitigating the impact of learning loss and poor mental health. Regarding learning loss, students need support catching up on their social and emotional development. This includes learning about self-management of stress and emotions, cultivating healthy relationships, and awareness of and communication about their emotions. All of these skills are learned behaviors, meaning students aren’t born with the capacity to engage in them. Yet all students need to learn them, in order to thrive in school and beyond. Since preventative programs are provided to all students, they present the perfect opportunity to teach these social-emotional skills in a classroom setting.
